Note
This vocabulary is informed by an understanding of genre classification as situationally-specific rhetorical action as theorized by Carolyn R. Miller and others. It does not claim to have arrived at a definitive taxonomy of literary forms, and considers such a taxonomy to be impossible. Rather, it represents a pragmatic approach to media, form, and genre, very broadly conceived. Its approach emerges from literary history and its structure and definitions are drawn from a range of sources ranging from literary taxonomies and Library of Congress classifications to Wikipedia.
This vocabulary was created to serve the Canadian Writing Research Collaboratory (CWRC), drawing on the genre terms of a range of projects including the Orlando Project. It therefore reflects the orientation of these projects towards British and Canadian anglophone historical and literary inquiry. The terms may be expanded to fit future needs.
